Lower Bucks Hospital Launches Persona IQ® – The First Smart Knee Implant for Total Knee Replacement Surgery
Bristol, PA (November 27, 2024) — Lower Bucks Hospital is proud to announce the introduction of Persona IQ®, the first and only smart knee implant to receive De Novo classification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for total knee replacement procedures. This cutting-edge implant integrates the well-established Persona® The Personalized Knee® with advanced implantable sensor technology, allowing for the measurement of range of motion, step count, walking speed, and other crucial gait metrics. Dr. Menachem M. Meller, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Lower Bucks Hospital, has recently begun utilizing the Persona IQ® system in his practice.
“We are thrilled to offer Persona IQ®, the world’s first smart knee implant, to our patients who are considering knee replacement surgery. This groundbreaking innovation will enable surgeons to access objective kinematic data from the implant after surgery,” said Dr. Menachem M. Meller, an orthopedic specialist at Lower Bucks Hospital.
The Persona IQ® features sophisticated sensor technology that captures and wirelessly transmits an array of gait data from the knee implant to a patient’s personal base station at home. This information is securely uploaded to a HIPAA-compliant cloud platform, accessible to both patients and their surgeons. Persona IQ® is designed to operate in conjunction with mymobility®, a remote care management platform that tracks mobility metrics before and after surgical procedures.
Dr. Meller is recognized for his expertise in providing patient-centered musculoskeletal care at Lower Bucks Hospital. He offers a comprehensive range of services for conditions affecting bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons in adults. From treating traumatic injuries and degenerative diseases to addressing sports injuries, the multidisciplinary team of board-certified experts utilizes the latest surgical and non-surgical techniques to alleviate pain, restore function, and expedite patients’ return to their daily lives.
“This innovative implant is the first of its kind capable of providing real-time insights into a patient’s recovery post-surgery, ensuring that the knee implant is functioning optimally. This technology not only enhances recovery by giving patients confidence in their new knee but also alerts us to any issues that may arise,” Dr. Meller added. Patients and their physicians can easily access data from the Persona IQ® through a specialized care management platform.
While a diverse range of total joint replacement patients may qualify for the Persona IQ® Smart Knee, Dr. Meller believes it may be especially beneficial for younger patients. “Initially, I anticipate that the Persona IQ® will be predominantly used for patients who we want to ensure enjoy the longest possible lifespan with their artificial knee. As this technology gains prevalence, I foresee it becoming the standard for artificial knees in the years to come.”
