Healthgrades’ comprehensive analysis assessed risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates across approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The findings highlighted significant disparities in performance, emphasizing the crucial need for patients to select healthcare facilities with exemplary safety ratings. Alarmingly, from 2021 to 2023, there were 173,280 preventable safety events among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four key patient safety indicators accounting for nearly 76% of these incidents. Hospitals awarded the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award demonstrated a markedly lower risk of experiencing these safety events compared to their non-recipient counterparts:
- In-hospital falls resulting in fractures: 54% less likely
- Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest: approximately 55% less likely
- Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital: approximately 69% less likely
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital: 72% less likely
